MEDRIX is Working to Meet the Need for Clean, Drinkable Water in Vietnam!

Many households in the mountainous areas in Central Vietnam are not connected to the Vietnam National Power Grid leaving them without electricity.  While we in the United States are rarely out of power for a couple hours or a couple days, these families and communities live without power on a daily basis.

In late 2008, A French-based Non-Government Organization (NGO) provided selected households in the mountainous area in Thu Thien-Hue ProviSolar Panelnce with solar panels.  These panels charge 12-volt batteries and provide households with electricity for lighting and the use of small appliances.  This summer, with the solar panels already in place and producing electricity from a renewable energy source, MEDRIX will test a 12-volt battery powered version of the MEDRIX Ultraviolet (UV) Water Treatment System.

MEDRIX UV Water Treatment System

To do this testing, MEDRIX is providing an internship position to a Brown University senior engineering student.  This student will travel to Thu Thien-Hue Province for the summer to test the effectiveness of the MEDRIX UV Water Treatment System using a 12-volt battery powered by the solar panel.  The MEDRIX intern will be joined by a Hue University graduate, and together they will set up the MEDRIX UV Water Treatment System, train the users, monitor the operation of the system, and test and monitor the outcomes of this project.

This partnership and collaboration is not only a wonderful opportunity for the student interns, but also for MEDRIX and our Vietnamese partnVillage House with Solar Panelers to gain hands-on experience in a real-world situation.  This research will be one way for MEDRIX to determine the effectiveness of using a 12-volt battery to provide drinkable water for families without electricity.  With this knowledge and with the anticipated outcomes, MEDRIX will have a great impact on poor families in many countries where electrical power is unavailable.

The world water crisis is one of the largest public health issues of our time.  The crisis is worst in developing countries lacking adequate access to clean water, basic sanitation, and hygiene education.  MEDRIX provides these three important elements for the people in Vietnam, but we need your help and support to continue to do so!

Donate to MEDRIX today and help fight against the largest public health issue of our time.
