The Aluoi Valley lies in the mountains of
central Vietnam near the border with Laos. Thirty five years ago,
this valley was the route of the infamous Ho Chi Minh trail. At
that time, much of the valley was defoliated with Agent Orange and was
frequently bombed.
Today, the hills are still barren and portions of the land are "off
limits" because of unexploded bombs. Presently, the valley is
home to about 35,000 Vietnamese, 85% of whom are of ethnic minority
groups.

World Vision has begun an eight-year
project in several hamlets of the valley to improve food security, water
supplies, micro-enterprise development, health care and education.
Last summer, a MEDRIX team visited the Phu Vinh hamlet and tested the
quality of water in a few existing wells. High counts of bacteria
were found. This means that the water is unsafe to drink without
endangering the health of the men, women and children of the
hamlet. Unfortunately, Phu Vinh is NOT part of the World Vision
project.

MEDRIX HAS BEEN ASKED TO
PROVIDE 15 WATER WELLS IN THE PHU VINH HAMLET.
MEDRIX PLANS TO COMPLETE THESE WELLS DURING THE SUMMER 2001 TRIP. |
